About
Elijah Shivers is a junior at Washtenaw Intermediate High School in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and the inspiration behind The Elijah Shivers JPS Foundation of Hope. At just three years old, Elijah was diagnosed with Juvenile Polyposis Syndrome (JPS), a rare hereditary condition characterized by the growth of multiple polyps in the gastrointestinal tract. These polyps can cause symptoms such as bleeding, anemia, abdominal pain, and—in some
cases—increased risk of gastrointestinal cancers. Managing JPS often requires ongoing monitoring, medical procedures, and a strong partnership with specialized care teams.
Despite facing the medical challenges associated with this rare syndrome, Elijah has never allowed his diagnosis to define him. His resilience, determination, and optimism continue to be a source of inspiration for everyone who knows him. Elijah is a dedicated student who works hard academically while also pursuing the activities he loves. He especially enjoys playing sports—most notably football—and winding down with video games in his free
time.

Beyond school and sports, Elijah is an advocate for himself and an active participant in his own healthcare journey, demonstrating a maturity well beyond his years. He also takes part in the Ann Arbor Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated’s Alpha Esquire Program, a leadership and mentorship initiative for young men that focuses on character development, academic excellence, and community engagement.
Elijah’s strength, courage, and unwavering spirit are the driving forces behind the foundation created in his honor. His journey fuels the mission to raise awareness, expand
research, and provide support for individuals and families affected by Juvenile Polyposis Syndrome and related conditions.
